Tanzania aims to become fully self-sufficient in sugar production by 2030 and start exporting surplus sugar from the 2026-27 season, as the country works to reduce its dependence on imports.
The Tanzania Sugar Board (SBT) presented its plans at the Nane Nane 2026 agricultural exhibition in Morogoro, highlighting investments in modern farming technology and expansion of the country’s sugar industry, The Citizen reported.
Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba visited the SBT pavilion at the exhibition and reviewed technologies including the DJI Agras T50 drone, which is being used for precision irrigation and fertiliser application.
Officials also demonstrated modern seed development, land preparation, storage and processing technologies. Nchemba said greater use of drones could help increase sugarcane production, improve sugar security and attract more young people to agriculture.
