Sugar beet sowing is in full swing
Despite the fact that bad weather and climate conditions have delayed sowing works for 10-15 days, the sugar beet sowing campaign is in full swing. As of April 18, 150 thousand hectares sown.
«Despite all the difficulties, sugar beet sowing will reach in time to April 25, because on average, this season, farms sow 5-7% of the total sugar beet area every day. For comparison, last year 90% were sown on a similar date», — comments Vasyl Dolinsky, the analyst of the commodity markets and agriculture of «Ukrsugar».
He says, that agribusinesses and enterprises which work with «Astarta-Kyiv» agroholding, «Radekhiv Sugar» refineries and «Ukrprominvest-Agro», will produce more than half of the total sugar beet harvest. At present, agroholdings have sowed more than 70% of the fields and plan to complete sowing till April 23.
The production units of «Radekhiv Sugar» began sugar beet sowing the first on April 4, after Easter all the farms of Ukraine simultaneously started planting:
«After analyzing the situation in the regions, it can be observed that there are no significant gaps between the regions this year, because all of them "came out" in the fields after Easter. Although the exceptions are Kharkiv, Cherkasy, and Kyiv regions, where weather conditions have caused a slight log in the field work schedules», — noted Dolinsky.
The absence of a "classic spring" resulted in an instantaneous transition from cold snow weather to relatively high temperatures. In such a situation, in order to successfully carry out the work, the agrarians have to mobilize all the forces and resources for sowing, in order to handle the time-bound sowing:
«On the other hand, the sum of effective temperatures this year is much higher, which indicates that we will get seedlings faster than last year. As for the forecasts, there is a high probability of frosts before May 15, it is very important, as our farm has 300 hectares of sugar beet seedlings. We hope that high amount of effective temperatures will allow us to get warmed soil, which will reduce the risk of negative effects of frosts», — says Vasyl Shevchuk, the deputy director general in charge of production of «Agricultural Complex «Zelena Dolyna».
Recall that, according to the «Ukrsugar» forecasts, this year the sugar beet areas will not exceed 280 thousand hectares. Thus, in the current season, enterprises plan to reduce the sugar beet area by 13% due to the low stock exchange price of sugar.
