NEPAL imports 50 ths. t of sugar from India for festival season
The government-owned Salt Trading Corporation (STC) has imported 25 ths. t of sugar from India to ensure that there is an adequate supply of the sweetener during the coming festival season, an official said.
The Kathmandu Post reports.
The STC will import the remaining 25 ths. t by November through ten consignments of 2,5 ths. t of sugar.
The sugar was imported from Renuka Sugar Mills in West Bengal at a cost of NPR 5 bln (USD 48,73 mln).
Sugar prices, which had surged to NRP 85-90/kg (USD 0,83-0,88/kg) from NPR 65-70/kg (USD 0,63-0,68/kg) due to low sugar reserves, will fall by NPR 2-3/kg (USD 0,02-0,03/kg) once the commodity has been imported, the STC said.
The country produces 165 ths. t of sugar per year against a requirement of 215 ths. t, according to the industry ministry.
