In the West of Ukraine, many new enterprises have started sugar beet growing even those who have never been involved in it. We are talking about both large agricultural holdings and small farmers. It is reported by UkrAgroConsal with reference to the material «Moisture is not always good: Sowing in Western Ukraine» on Kurkul.com.

Sugar beet is the main crop in «Zakhidnyi Bug» farm in Lviv region. It brings 80% of the company's profit. Therefore, this year, 15.3 thousand hectares were allocated for beetroot.

«Last season, sugar beet was the most profitable crop and the weather contributed to this. In addition, we managed to reach a record 9-year average yield of 72 t/ha. It was difficult a few years ago, when we increased the amount of sugar beet from 8 to 13 thousand hectares. And now we are trying to balance the crop rotation for beets. That's why we sow a lot of winter crops», — commented the Deputy Chief Agronomist Dmytro Kostraev.

The agronomist also noted that many new enterprises have started sugar beet growing even those who have never been involved in it. We are talking about both large agricultural holdings and small farmers.

Vasyl Belozerskikh, a deputy director of Credit Agricole Bank's agribusiness support department, believes that indeed sugar beet is profitable, but it is illogical for small producers to add it to their crop rotation.

«The culture is very specific, demanding, with a lot of risks, accordingly — it is potentially the most profitable, but to focus only on beets growing in wartime conditions is probably a little illogical. This is not a new culture for agricultural holdings. They know how to grow it, have special equipment, proper roads, etc. So they will have a positive result in the segment of sugar beet production. It's another matter when it's a small farmer who has 1,000 hectares, 200 hectares of which he devoted to sugar beet. It will be difficult for him to make a profit, because the technology is still correlated, pests and weeds change from year to year. That is, small producers in difficult times should not focus all their efforts and resources on complex technologies», — said the representative of Credit Agricole Bank.

Also, sugar beet is the favorite crop of «Agroprodservice» company agronomist Roman Vinnichuk. 3,500 hectares were allocated for it in the farm. Although beetroot is expensive to grow, last year it was the most profitable for the farm.

«Last year was a good year for sugar beet. We got a yield of 75 t/ha. Every year we sow 3-3.5 thousand hectares. We do not skimp on beets, we give everything to the maximum: spraying at least 9 times, a lot of nitrogen, as well as potassium and phosphorus. The wholesale price of sugar is UAH 20/kg. And from 1 hectare we have 5.6 tonnes of sugar. That is, we have a minimum of UAH 112,000/ha. And even at the minimum price, the costs will pay off. That's why you can make money here», — said the agronomist.
