In Australia sugar mill operations crushed by heavy rains
In Australia heavy rains have brought crushing at five Mackay region sugar mills to a halt as growers struggle to harvest.
It is reported by Daily Mercury.
Widespread coastal rain has severely limited harvesting operations and all of Wilmar Sugar's eight mills had run out of cane to crush by lunchtime.
Cane Supply and Grower Relations general manager Paul Giordani said Plane Creek Mill at Sarina ran out of cane on October 17 about 10pm while the Herbert mills and Invicta Mill in the Burdekin crushed out just before midday of October 18.
«Proserpine mill also ran out of cane this morning, but a small amount of cane is being harvested in the district today and we will resume crushing operations when we have enough supply», — Mr Giordani said.
With more rain forecast, Mr Giordani said some mills could be stopped for days.
«We'll stay in contact with harvesting operators about their ability to supply cane and will reassess the situation on a day-by-day basis», — he said.
