Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh is likely to drop due to heavy rainfall in the region resulting in a delay in the crushing season as well as damage to crops due to water logging in the fields, as per the industry officials and experts.

It is reported by ChiniMandi.

An industrial official said: «Sugar production in the state was projected to be 12.05 million tonnes (mt) in the current season including quantity to be diverted to ethanol but the recent rains have changed the situation and though there will be a drop. It is too early to estimate now since rain is still continuing».

As per media report, This season sugarcane output is estimated at 176.71 mt, slightly down compared to last year’s 177.43 mt.

«Waterlogging in the fields will affect the crop. This may attract the spread of the red rot disease. The adverse impact on yield will be less compared to recovery», — said The Hindu Business Line quoted Bakshi Ram, who played a major role in the development of CO-0238, a high-yielding variety of cane, as saying.

Farmers in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh have expressed their displeasure after their crops sustained damage due to excessive rains in the district.

Meanwhile, due to the rains in parts of the state, people living in low-lying areas are facing problems as a flood-like situation is created due to a rise in the water levels of the Rapti river in Gorakhpur.

According to the India Meteorological Department, various places in the state are likely to witness rain on Tuesday.
