Egypt expects to produce 2,85 million tonnes of sugar locally this season, an agriculture ministry official told on Wednesday, covering around 90% of the country's needs.

It is reported by Nasdaq.

The amount, which includes both sugar beet and cane, would mean Egypt imports only "small quantities" this season, said Mostafa Abdel Gawad, head of the ministry's Sugar Crops Council.

Imports of white and raw sugar have been possible since June after a rolling ban on imports expired.

A new sugar refinery in Minya, in the south of Egypt, is expected to produce 450,000 tonnes of sugar from around March or April 2022 to create a surplus which the country could export, Abdel Gawad said.
