Australia sugar mills resume crushing after wet spell
In Australia crushing was resumed at Wilmar Sugar's Plane Creek Mill in the early hours of Monday morning after a five-day wet weather stoppage.
It is reported by Daily Mercury.
Proserpine is expected to start up around 4 am on Tuesday morning when contractors started cutting again on Monday. The mill was shut down for five days as well due to rain and cane supply issues.
General Manager Cane Supply and Grower Relations, Paul Giordani, said that field conditions had dried out enough in the region for harvesting operations to resume.
«All eight of our mills were brought to a standstill by last week's rain event because the field sector simply could not supply cane», — Mr. Giordani said.
He said harvesting operations resumed in the Plane Creek Mill area on Sunday, enabling the mill to start crushing about 1 am on Monday.
Crushing is expected to resume in the Herbert district late this week. Boggy field conditions in the Burdekin mean harvesting is not likely to resume there until the weekend.
