China’s sugar production to increase by 100,000 tonnes in 2026/27

According to FAS USDA, China’s marketing year (MY) 2026/27 sugar production is forecast to continue growing to reach 12.7 million tonnes. MY 2025/26 sugar production is estimated at 12.6 million tonnes, 1.1 million tonnes higher than the USDA official estimate based on increased cane sugar production, particularly in Guangxi province. China’s sugar consumption for both MY 2025/26 and MY 2026/27 remain unchanged at 15.8 million tonnes.

China’s marketing year (MY) 2026/27 (October-September) cane sugar production is forecast to reach 11.3 million tonnes, up 200,000 tonnes from the revised MY 2025/26 estimate. Expanded acreage in Guangxi and increased milling of imported cane from neighboring countries (e.g., Myanmar and Laos) in Yunnan will drive the growth in cane sugar production.

MY 2026/27 beet sugar production is forecast to fall by 100,000 tonnes — to 1.4 million tonnes, following a 10,000-hectare reduction in planting area. This decline to 205,000 hectares stems largely from weakening beet purchase prices, which may prompt farmers to switch to more profitable alternative crops.
