Bunge Global SA has agreed to sell its two sugarcane mills in Brazil, Rio Vermelho and Nova Unialco, to COFCO International, as the agribusiness company continues to streamline its sugar and bioenergy assets.
Bunge announced the transaction on September 1, 2026. The financial terms were not disclosed.
The two mills are located in Junqueirópolis and Guararapes in São Paulo state. The deal remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.
The mills were previously owned by Viterra Limited and became part of Bunge following the completion of Bunge’s combination with Viterra in July 2025.

The acquisition will add two sugarcane mills to COFCO International’s existing Brazilian operations. The company operates four sugar mills in Brazil and manages about 189,000 hectares of plantations, mainly in São Paulo state.
COFCO produces sugar and ethanol for domestic and international markets and operates a sugar transhipment terminal in Votuporanga. It also trades sugar globally through offices in markets including Brazil, India, the United States and Southeast Asia.
The latest deal follows Bunge’s earlier exit from its Brazilian sugar and bioenergy joint venture with BP.
In June 2024, Bunge agreed to sell its 50% stake in BP Bunge Bioenergia to BP for net proceeds of about $800 million. The joint venture, established in 2019, operated 11 mills across Brazil.
At the time, Bunge said the business was not part of its long-term strategy and that the sale would allow it to focus investment on its core businesses and strengthen its balance sheet.
The latest transaction is different because the Rio Vermelho and Nova Unialco mills entered Bunge’s portfolio through its Viterra combination rather than being part of Bunge’s historical Brazilian sugar operations.
Bunge has not disclosed the expected completion date for the sale.
