Australia’s sugar output to rise 9%

The Australian Sugar Manufacturers (ASM) expects the country’s sugar industry to crush 30 million tonnes of sugarcane across Queensland and northern New South Wales by 2026.

«30 million tonnes is about the same level as last year. We have been close to processing 40 million tonnes of sugarcane over the last decade. We need more investment from the state and federal governments to support Queensland’s sugar industry, which is a stable source of supply to the country’s regions», — an ASM spokesman said.

The sugarcane processing season began this month, with mills gradually ramping up across Queensland, with ASM predicting that the state’s total sugarcane processing volume will reach 28.7 million tonnes this year.

The Queensland Canegrowers Association expects the state’s sugar mills to process 29 million tonnes of cane this year.

The state’s main sugar regions, including Mackay, Burdekin, Herbert, Tableland, Mulgrave, Isis, Bundaberg and Proserpine, are all set for a strong season, with favourable growing conditions and increased cane yields, according to ASM.
