The French sugar beet industry is confronting a significant production decline, with forecasts indicating a drop of more than 20% compared to the five-year average due to summer heatwaves and drought.
The Association Interprofessionnelle de la Betterave Sucrière (AIBS) reports an 18% reduction in root weight, equating to nearly 10 tons lost per hectare, alongside a 50% decrease in leaf development, representing a deficit of about 20 tons per hectare.
Water stress has notably hindered beet growth across several regions, severely limiting the crop’s vegetative cycle potential. The AIBS emphasizes the urgent need to enhance sector resilience through research, innovation, improved crop protection, and expanded irrigation infrastructure to safeguard future production and the sustainability of beet cultivation. Immediate support measures are also called for to assist the most affected farms.
