Karnataka’s decision to develop Pandavapura taluk in Mandya district as an organic farming hub is expected to open new opportunities for sugarcane and other crops cultivation, with authorities planning to bring major crops, including sugarcane, under organic certification over the next three years.
The state government identified Pandavapura as an “organic taluk” in its 2026-27 budget, aiming to promote sustainable agriculture, improve soil health and encourage the production of chemical-free food.
While the region is known for growing crops such as ragi, vegetables and flowers, officials have also included sugarcane in their long-term organic farming roadmap. Authorities plan to certify locally grown crops, including sugarcane, as organic within three years, creating new marketing opportunities for farmers and potentially increasing the value of their produce.
The programme is being led by Pandavapura MLA Darshan Puttannaiah along with agriculture and horticulture departments, farmer organizations and local officials. Farmers are being encouraged to gradually shift a portion of their land to organic cultivation rather than making an immediate full-scale transition.
Officials believe reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides can improve soil health and make farming more sustainable in the long run. The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the environmental and health impacts associated with intensive chemical use in agriculture.
The initiative is expected to serve as a model for other sugarcane-growing regions, demonstrating how organic farming practices can be integrated into commercial crop production while improving sustainability and farmer incomes.
